Ontario) and Montreal without any assistance. “There was a lot of saber rattling going on,” said John R. Grodzinski, a history professor at the Royal Military College of Canada, who specializes in the War of 1812.Yet despite its population advantage, the United States had only about 12,000 men in uniform, including “too many incompetent officers and too many raw, untrained recruits,” explained Donald R. Hickey, a history professor at Wayne State College and author of various books on the War of 1812. A number of other factors also favored Canada at the war’s outset. For one thing, the British controlled the Great Lakes and were therefore better able to move troops and supplies. Moreover, they received support from Canadians, who many Americans falsely believed would welcome them as liberators, and from Native American tribes worried about U.S. expansionism. “The USA was woefully unprepared,” Hickey said. “Plus, the logistical challenges of waging war on a distant frontier were daunting if not insuperable.”

When U.S. General William Hull assembled a force of about 2,000 men and led them to Detroit, the jumping-off point for an intended assault on nearby Fort Malden in Upper Canada, the British found out about his plans by seizing a schooner with his baggage and papers on it. To make matters worse for Hull, about 200 Ohio militiamen refused to go beyond American territory. The general nonetheless remained confident. On July 12, 1812, he took his men across the Detroit River and into Canada, where he immediately issued a written proclamation telling inhabitants that they would “be emancipated from tyranny and oppression.” “Had I any doubt of eventual success I might ask your assistance, but I do not,” Hull declared. “I come prepared for every contingency.”

These words proved immediately laughable. Hull briefly laid siege to Fort Malden but soon withdrew after warriors under the leadership of Shawnee chief Tecumseh intercepted his supply train. British commander Isaac Brock then chased the Americans back across the river and began launching cannon fire at Fort Detroit from the Canadian side. Brock arranged for a bogus document to reach the Americans that told of large numbers of Native Americans approaching Detroit.

Having the air conditioning on all day is what we do, but having it feel like that outside would be glorious! I remember several years ago I had packed a lot of candles in the back of my car (SUV), and when I pulled the box out, they were all melted and stuck together. And forget about candy/chocolate! Heck, I had even subscribed (through Amazon) to get some health bars that had chocolate on the outside, and they sent me a message last April that they would be stalling future shipments until November because of heat issues. No real point in the subscription. I’m sure there are plenty of solar farms here in FL, but just not in this city…right now. Seems were getting one shortly though. I do, however, see many homes with them on it. I suppose if we were going to build another house, I might think about incorporating them, but I’m not in the market for building. We did that with the house we had before this one, and it was a bit of a pain. Hope you have a great trip!

So where did your friend’s cousin live? You were told wrong. Y’all is the contraction for “you all”, so multiple people. If he or she was north of the Mason-Dixon line, that may be the problem. ~ So does Daniel still play his own music? I assume he’s not still with his same band, but maybe he still likes to play music on his own. ~ Yep, I’m sure a boiler and a furnace does the same thing, just maybe in a different way. We call ours a “hot water heater”. Fawcett, that’s correct, but maybe not for you guys, hence the red line. For instance “colour” has a red squiggly under it here. I’m leaving it though. ~ Gosh!!! 20 ticks!!! Where or how did she get all those? That’s a lot!

Ticks are a very scary thing. They carry all kinds of nasty diseases! They’re relatively common down here so I like to keep a close check on the kids. I’ve seen them on children at school before….maybe three in the last three years, so not a whole lot, but some. How long has he been in Vietnam? I have a good friend from there, so she goes back every year, usually over our summer months. ~ I would like a remodel on our home, but I think it might just be easier to move altogether. Seems less intrusive. Either one is a big deal though. Yes, many words are different, but even if we normally use different words, we still know what yours are because some folks use them, and many of them were used years ago, just not anymore. For instance when you say “trousers”. I know they’re pants, but we never use that word…..they did in the 40’s though. “Knickers” would be the same. When we read old books, the term “boiler” will be in there.

Yep, I’m always searching for a shady spot, but fortunately there are a lot of trees around here so that’s easy enough. With me, it’s not just a normal red-head reaction though, I actually have a mild allergy to the sun that started around puberty. If too long in direct sunlight, I’ll start to hive up, BUT I can put an umbrella over me or even a sweater, and I’ll be fine. My youngest, who is also a redhead, doesn’t really like sun all that much, yet he’s in it all the time because he lives for all sports. I have to douse him in quadruple the sunscreen, quadruple the amount of times as my oldest, BUT I’m used to it. And strangely, his two best friends are both Cuban, so their moms now keep mini sunscreens in their purses for him.

Actually I really like the cold and would much prefer to have y’all’s weather than ours. What’s up with Daniel? Is this syndrome very bad? So where was the tick infestation? In his home? How long will y’all be over there? ~ No idea how big SF is, but it’s pretty big. No, Sacramento is the capital of California. ~ How long will it take them to get finished with the kitchen?
