Description
Ontario) and Montreal without any assistance. “There was a lot of saber rattling going on,” said John R. Grodzinski, a history professor at the Royal Military College of Canada, who specializes in the War of 1812.Yet despite its population advantage, the United States had only about 12,000 men in uniform, including “too many incompetent officers and too many raw, untrained recruits,” explained Donald R. Hickey, a history professor at Wayne State College and author of various books on the War of 1812. A number of other factors also favored Canada at the war’s outset. For one thing, the British controlled the Great Lakes and were therefore better able to move troops and supplies. Moreover, they received support from Canadians, who many Americans falsely believed would welcome them as liberators, and from Native American tribes worried about U.S. expansionism. “The USA was woefully unprepared,” Hickey said. “Plus, the logistical challenges of waging war on a distant frontier were daunting if not insuperable.”

When U.S. General William Hull assembled a force of about 2,000 men and led them to Detroit, the jumping-off point for an intended assault on nearby Fort Malden in Upper Canada, the British found out about his plans by seizing a schooner with his baggage and papers on it. To make matters worse for Hull, about 200 Ohio militiamen refused to go beyond American territory. The general nonetheless remained confident. On July 12, 1812, he took his men across the Detroit River and into Canada, where he immediately issued a written proclamation telling inhabitants that they would “be emancipated from tyranny and oppression.” “Had I any doubt of eventual success I might ask your assistance, but I do not,” Hull declared. “I come prepared for every contingency.”

These words proved immediately laughable. Hull briefly laid siege to Fort Malden but soon withdrew after warriors under the leadership of Shawnee chief Tecumseh intercepted his supply train. British commander Isaac Brock then chased the Americans back across the river and began launching cannon fire at Fort Detroit from the Canadian side. Brock arranged for a bogus document to reach the Americans that told of large numbers of Native Americans approaching Detroit.

Ehem, considering your wife, children and grandchildren, you have more relatives that are Dutch, but I get what you mean. So, I think you're back from your vacation today, if I'm correct. You said the 6th. Hopefully you had a good time. Well, I wasn't really taking a sojourn, only from daily/weekly comments on channels. They just got overwhelming there for a while. I know you know how that goes. I came back on the channels on that particular day to say Happy Birthday to Blaine aka woojoke. Hope you have a good weekend!

Most everyone is headstrong, Al, in that they believe what they say and think is right/true/just, including you. What you seemingly are upset about is that some won't back down from their stance, but ehem, that goes for you as well. We all do it. You're English, I'm American, so it's not just Dutch people. In fact, Alex calls me stubborn all the time, and I am, but we respect each other's views AND we respect that we can't change the other's view, then move on for the sake of a 15 year friendship. It's the same thing one does in a marriage, which is just another form of a relationship. Give and take and choose your poison. Now, out of respect for him, I won't mention him anymore, because he doesn't like that.

Lol, I can always count you to not change, Al. Good grief, if you knew I was suspicious of Mark, why in the world would you put in on the channels for him to see? That being said, he already knows. I've spoken to him about my original thoughts of him. On the channels, he could be an A-1 @sshole at times, but after getting to know him, I realize he's not at all what he portrays on the channels. I'm confused about your Riny comment. It's okay to disagree though, BUT I've never spoken to Riny. I only know that Alex thinks highly of her, so I'm good with that. Oh, I don't think I was on here 4 months ago, only 2 because it was Blaine's birthday, so I came on to tell him Happy Birthday. Same month as yours, btw, but his is at the beginning of July. I hope you all had a great birthday and that life is treating you well. :)

Hey there, Al! Yeah, "time" and "life" have gotten in the way of coming on social sites. I can't view your featured video. It says it's unavailable to me. I finally took down your "Precious Time" video that I had up on my channel for over a year. I just stuck up another Journey one though. Hope life is treating you well.
