Description
Ontario) and Montreal without any assistance. “There was a lot of saber rattling going on,” said John R. Grodzinski, a history professor at the Royal Military College of Canada, who specializes in the War of 1812.Yet despite its population advantage, the United States had only about 12,000 men in uniform, including “too many incompetent officers and too many raw, untrained recruits,” explained Donald R. Hickey, a history professor at Wayne State College and author of various books on the War of 1812. A number of other factors also favored Canada at the war’s outset. For one thing, the British controlled the Great Lakes and were therefore better able to move troops and supplies. Moreover, they received support from Canadians, who many Americans falsely believed would welcome them as liberators, and from Native American tribes worried about U.S. expansionism. “The USA was woefully unprepared,” Hickey said. “Plus, the logistical challenges of waging war on a distant frontier were daunting if not insuperable.”

When U.S. General William Hull assembled a force of about 2,000 men and led them to Detroit, the jumping-off point for an intended assault on nearby Fort Malden in Upper Canada, the British found out about his plans by seizing a schooner with his baggage and papers on it. To make matters worse for Hull, about 200 Ohio militiamen refused to go beyond American territory. The general nonetheless remained confident. On July 12, 1812, he took his men across the Detroit River and into Canada, where he immediately issued a written proclamation telling inhabitants that they would “be emancipated from tyranny and oppression.” “Had I any doubt of eventual success I might ask your assistance, but I do not,” Hull declared. “I come prepared for every contingency.”

These words proved immediately laughable. Hull briefly laid siege to Fort Malden but soon withdrew after warriors under the leadership of Shawnee chief Tecumseh intercepted his supply train. British commander Isaac Brock then chased the Americans back across the river and began launching cannon fire at Fort Detroit from the Canadian side. Brock arranged for a bogus document to reach the Americans that told of large numbers of Native Americans approaching Detroit.

Humans manhandle Nature ... lack of respect , destruction of fauna and flora, waste of resources, so many behaviors destroying the beauty of this wonderful gift ... but despite all Nature has her secret guardians ... and against them, no one can do anything .... I often talk about legends and traditions, but overall, I often talk about things I saw .... and these guardians are real ... I took a course once that was based on the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading for young readers and students where English was their second language, American English. In it, they talked about word/spelling structure and the differences between American and British English. It was really interesting and made a ton of sense (at the time), but admittedly I’ve forgotten a lot of it. It definitely discussed Latin and Greek roots though, which is HUGE in the English language. ~ Eh, as far as Trump is concerned, I highly doubt he’ll ever do any jail time, regardless of the crime. I believe he once said that he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and not lose any voters. Something similar has come to fruition and he seems to be correct. That pretty much says it all about many of the citizens of America. He speaks with all the verbiage of a 9 year old angry child, like a cliched cartoon character, yet many applaud and act as though he’s an icon of patriotism….assuming he knows what the word means. It’s truly incomprehensible.

The Pale doesn't exist in any real sense anymore Greg. Sometimes Irish people from other parts of Ireland will refer to Dublin, in a somewhat derisive way, as "The Pale". But since it is not an area controlled by the English anymore, one cannot say that it still exists. Dubliners tend to look down their snot at the rest of Ireland. We call people from other parts of the country, "Culchies", pronounced (KUL-CHEESE) which is an Irish word for a hick, a rube, a yokel, a rustic or an unsophisticated country bumpkin. We also sometimes call them "muck savages". They in turn show their contempt for Dubliners by calling us "Jackeens" which means little union jacks, the implication being that we are more anglicized than we are Irish. They also call us "west Brits", the implication being that Dublin is Britain's most westerly city. We all come together when the country is competing in rugby or football though. It's similar to the north/south divide in England.

Since dawn of time, humans have created gods to feel stronger and probably less alone in the universe. But under the mask of these gods, what is there ... we, may be, simply, the one in us who can accomplish much more than he imagines ... subject of reflection for the weekend dear friends :) Love ♥ Depuis l'aube des temps l humain se crée des dieux pour se sentir plus fort et sans doute moins seul dans l'univers.

I'd have to disagree with you there Greg. The problem with Communism is that it doesn't take into account human nature, and the propensity of man to subvert any political system or governmental structure that he creates. Communism is structured in such a way as to make it easy for that system to be manipulated by those with ambition or a desire for power and control. Unlike the structure of liberal democracies, Communism has no checks and balances. It sounds great on paper, but it assumes that it can be forever implemented by leaders of good character and noble intent. Democracy on the other hand, assumes from the start...that our leaders can, and will fall foul of corruption, thus giving the people the power to remove or replace them. Communism has failed utterly in every country that has ever experimented with it. The reason being, that there are no infallible leaders who can implement it in an infallible way, and there never will be.

I think so too Greg. It's the way that Republicans want America to be, every man for himself, so called "rugged individualism". Yes lol, I loved those "you're fired" banners too! I was really hoping that the papers would have that headline, after he lost. I agree, I think Europe has struck the best balance between free market capitalism and a reasonable amount of socialism. Competition breeds excellence, but we do a good job of balancing competition with the collective good. So Star Trek Discovery has been cancelled. I'm not surprised, it was a load of preachy, SJW shite!
