A strummed guitar tune in the key of D, the song’s power comes from it’s lyrical simplicity. What at first seems like a straightforward and familiar song of longing for a lover who is far away soon reveals the deeper problem–it’s not distance itself keeping the pair apart, but a man built to roam.
Lurking underneath the words of the last verse, more powerful for being unstated, is a growing awareness for both the singer and his listening partner. The singer can’t fly, any more than he can stay in one place, or make the relationship work. He can’t or won’t try, and so both are in for a lot more lonely nights.
