You know, i was wanting to discuss that thought about humans observing the Universe so far away, so i am happy you mentioned it. Maybe you read my mind ? haha There's not much discussion on that. Yes, because these 'heavenly' bodies are so far away - some are thousands of light years distant - many are not even there anymore, and at best anything viewed at these great distances are vastly different then they were when their light reached us. Its an odd thought but all those pics of the distant Universe are moot by now, in our *physical* world of senses. Isn't the concept of thought fairly well defined ? Seems like it is, therefore Descartes must have made a correct deduction. I just don't attribute 'modern technological discoveries' much credit for giving any help to these age-old questions, as you do. Well, perhaps quantum physics has shed some light. But nothing in the way of how did it all start ? Guess that's a fallacy of *physical awareness* if time does not really exist: there's no beginning nor any end. So pls tell me, do you think there is any form of consciousness after the physical body dries up and blows away ? Do you think there is any preservation at all of the individual as we know ourselves ? You ask if when "we pray to a higher power, are we praying to ourselves"? Well, it seems so, but not exclusively. Ourselves, but also the Whole of which we are a part of. Hence the Science of the Mind and other groups manipulating their reality. "And so mote it be" !

hey Mark, checked your last comment , sorry that is has been a while , you can always mail me lol. I have no problem with confusing you. My Double Dutch translated in English isn't all that. Hope you are doing well? And I am doing fine thanks, nothing major happening, life is good, is all I can say. haha rugby, well I said a while back to Rob that I didn't get American football at all, and get bored within 5 minutes, same goes for Rugby. Only game for me is football, and that was rough enough, I broke someone's leg once , I used to make sliding all the time. Those overpaid prima donna's, who dive and die like a swan, isn't happening on the amateur field.

I've been thinking a lot about our discussion. Guess its burning a hole in my psyche. You said, " Where does consciousness come from, and why...."? Apparently humanity has reached the same juncture that we have, and with the same question. They came up with the monotheistic god theory or the polytheistic godS of the pagans or ancient Romans and Greeks. At this point, i don't see any reason for any sort of a *detached* supreme being. Seems more like its one big consciousness of which we are all part of. Like a drop of water in the sea. Hence the Akashic records , true mediums (psychics), and the Hundredth Monkey theory. So we are all part of "It", if It exists. It seems to hinge on if consciousness is something produced by the physical mechanism of our brain OR if its a universal, eternal thing for which our brains act merely as antennae to draw it in to a human (or animal). Which do you think ? *Is there any form of consciousness* or any form of preservation at all of an individual after physical death, or not ? This is what bothers me about atheism. The believers reject the "mean old man in the clouds with the brimstone" - Fine. But it seems they fail to look any farther for anything and just believe that they are the ultimate greatest things to walk the earth, and they are totally separate from everything else. Maybe i'm wrong, but they fail to have any philosophy or to think much at all about anything but themselves.

Wow, this discussion took me to exactly where i needed to be. Thank you SO much ! I got a bachelors degree in metaphysics a few years ago and i have been wanting to take some more courses and do my masters thesis but the subject of it has to be something of prime interest to me which also will be worth creating in a hopefully rather unique manner. I was set on doing "consciousness", and nearly every day something pops out at me on the internet with articles about it. It does seem to be a difficult concept, doesn't it ? Amazing that this thought thread which began with us about "good and evil" has now turned to "consciousness". Thanks again. Your brilliant remark, "Physics now seems to corroborate such a statement, since reality appears to be shaped by the sentient observer." is exactly what quantum physics discovered a few years ago. Its mind blowing the results of an experiment. They observed one of the tiniest particles known through an electron microscope and took a picture of it while watching it. Then they took more pics when no one was observing the particle and it was different looking when no one was looking at it ! This seems to prove that we DO have an effect on things when we look at them or bring them into our consciousness. Same when we think of things. This would explain how people can affect others with thoughts, etc. Maybe it settles the question of if a tree falls and no one hears it, is there a noise ?

I'm gonna focus on "consciousness" as my theme, no matter how difficult it may be. There's no point in writing about something that is already definitive with no room for investigation. Hopefully i can maybe make a new contribution in the field, or at least compile a lot of research and progress the topic to where it will be of some use to others. Maybe i can get enough for a book. That's supposed to be an honorable thing to do, right ? To contribute to the world in some way. Even if its in a small way. Also your line about the "sentient observer" is not exclusive to humans, which is awesome because animals surely are conscious and i believe plants are as well, and stones and everything to whatever primitive minute degree. They must be if a microscopic particle is. As to whether there are beings out there in space who are more advanced than us, probably so. But its probably in technological material ways which don't interest me so much as a philosopher, although i am sure they interest you. And as for Descartes not knowing what he is, yeah it is beside the point. The real issue is that he thinks and he IS. xx

An interesting concept you presented from a TV show or whatever, that maybe we are being observed. That's another intuitive possibility that ran through my head as a kid way back in grammar school, the same time that i formed many of the ideas i still have today about Time, holograms, fractals, et al. I also thought at one time then that it is possible the nothing really exists out there and its all props that i created with my mind. And i postulated that maybe people do not see the same things universally such as colors. All of it is true - in a way. We ARE being watched at least by ourselves, which is part of the Universe's conscious observation. And our actions, thoughts, and deeds are permanently recorded in our effects on the Whole. And yes, ppl see different things such as colors. Some are color blind. My green will appear blue-green to them. Furthermore animals seem to see and hear things that we can't, or their perception is different. "Reality" is then obviously subjective to our individual senses. And yes, the props are part of the Whole, and not so real as ourselves, hence the separation illusion. Now fractals and the holographic nature of the Universe is basically accepted. I thought our molecules making up our bodies, which are so much like a solar system or galaxy, must be tiny solar systems in themselves which can be further broken down into more minute galaxies. In this way too, we are observed as a human is aware of their components in a homeostasis context.

Well, i'll be damned ! I totally agree with mostly all you have said. Totally brilliant. Some golden stars for: "life wherever it may occur in the universe, is the possible by-product of planet formation, just as planets themselves are the by-product of star formation." Exactly ! Its all an evolving process. That's another proof Time doesn't exist in the Absolute - there was no beginning and there will be no end. Therefore, there's nothing in between. Just that non-ending circle or more precisely a sphere as Time bends back to itself. And, " the universe is at the very least indifferent to our existence". You betcha ! But there is some, perhaps difference of the karmic concept and i think it is just by definition. As for "crimes" i think people have a bad side which is triggered off by a sick society. "Poverty" - this is something that is largely in control of the supposed victim. If ppl from ghettos, underdeveloped countries, parapalegics like Hawking, and ppl in the great depression can become millionaires or world icons, then there's not much room for excuses. The Jewish holocaust is the most difficult. Again - from a backward and corrupt society. *Groups* become cults with their ignorance and mass hysteria.

Shit happens. But karma did not create it, i'm not saying that. We agree that its exclusively impossible to define good and evil. Absolute definitions just don't exist. Therefore defining karma as "payback" is not accurate. I see karma in a scientific vernacular: "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." But you cite Stalin as going to sleep and dying peacefully. And maybe Hitler ? How 'bout Charlie Manson ? We have to go back and consider how we are ALL ONE. Separateness is an illusion of the ego. So everyone in the culture that produced them suffers perhaps. In ways that we don't necessarily know. Or on a larger stage; remember as you said, the Universe doesn't give a damn. So, should we ? Its hard not to, isn't it ? If these sickos should have gotten some retribution, then what is the converse for those "goodies" like Mother Theresa ? It doesn't seem she was compensated in much of any way and she just dried up and blew away like everyone else. But how does anyone know that Stalin didn't suffer ? No one knows what was in his head in the last days or if he was at peace with himself or others. I think retribution (karma) comes to the Whole, not necessarily back to the same person. Those that say it does claim the lots are meaded out in the next life, but i personally cannot say if there is anything at all, as per an individual, after physical life. Its the mass consciousness (society) that creates sickos and then suffers.
